Accessing Post-Disaster Support for Makers & Artisans
In the wake of a disaster, it can be difficult to know what to do or where to turn for help.
That is why Nest, in partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund and with support from Etsy, developed Responding to Climate Disasters: A Disaster Recovery Guidebook for US Artisans & Maker-Entrepreneurs, a comprehensive guide to the post-disaster resources available to small business owners and the next steps to accessing them.

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, affecting ecosystems, economies, and communities in the US and worldwide.
A Nest survey of global artisan businesses found that 3 out of every 10 handcraft business leaders have experienced extreme weather events that adversely affected their operations and the individuals who worked for them between 2019 and 2022.
Extreme weather events and ongoing climate-related stresses, such as sea-level rise and changing temperature patterns, are becoming more common in many communities, posing unique challenges for business protection, especially for small, home-based operations.
As we face more frequent and costly climate disasters, Nest, alongside our partners, wants to empower creative entrepreneurs with the resources needed to protect their businesses.
Building Climate Resilience for Small Handcraft Businesses
Recognizing the increasing effects of climate change on small businesses, Nest is committed to working with our partners to provide helpful resources to US makers to strengthen their resiliency before a disaster strikes.
The Building Climate Resilience: A Disaster Preparedness Guidebook is designed to provide you with practical information, resources, and step-by-step guidance to navigate the complex landscape of climate resilience and disaster preparation. By being informed, proactive, and prepared, you can minimize the disruption caused by climate-related events and continue to thrive in an ever-changing world.
