Nest Celebrates 15 Years of Impact

In 2006, Rebecca van Bergen founded Nest with a simple, bold, and perhaps audacious idea: that supporting the growth and development of craft has the power to change our world.

It was a radical concept for its moment, but one that took hold. And today, 15 years later, we’re seeing the impact of that bold idea in so many ways.

As Nest celebrates 15 years of improving our world through the power of craft, we’re sharing a range of different opportunities for our community to support Nest and our work to support the global artisan and maker economy.

Over the last 15 years, Nest has built a network of over 1,600 artisan and maker businesses across 120 countries, all of whom are using craft to support their families and communities. Our year-end campaigns celebrate the talents of the Nest Artisan & Maker Guild by showcasing their handcrafted items in creative ways that raise funds for the featured businesses as well as for Nest’s programming.

The Power of Craft
Nest’s Power of Craft Campaign celebrates the potential of artisan employment as a means to advance social and economic equality for women, people of color, and craft communities across the United States and around the world. Through a curated selection of 15 awe-inspiring products, each of which is handmade by a member of the Nest Artisan & Maker Guild and represents a value that is core to Nest’s legacy, we’re showcasing the many ways in which craft holds the power to build a better future.

As Nest has grown, so have the multitude of impacts that have come from our work of supporting the growth and development of a handworker economy. We’ve seen how a striking handwoven cocoon chair literally creates a safe haven for the women in high-risk areas of El Salvador crafting it. How each handwoven sweetgrass basket from South Carolina’s Lowcountry is preserving a cultural tradition of over 300 years. And how the creation of a hand-thrown ceramic bowl can support the re-entry of formerly-incarcerated individuals.

We hope that this collection inspires you by offering a glimpse of what’s possible when we support handworkers, artisans, and makers everywhere.

Items purchased through this campaign will ship directly from the artisan business. In addition to the benefit provided to the featured artisan business, the purchase price also includes a donation to Nest.

One World, Many Homes
In addition to Nest’s Power of Craft campaign, you can also join Nest by hosting or supporting Nest’s One World, Many Homes celebration. Supporters can donate directly or register to ‘Host a Celebration’ with family and friends to help raise awareness and funds for Nest’s work.

Events may be in-person or virtual and can be invite-only or open to the public. In addition to local cocktail and dinner parties, zoom panels and virtual fundraisers, you can also host a crafting workshop with an artisan from Nest’s Guild network. When you sign up to host a gathering, you will get a toolkit with all you need to host a Nest celebration, including a list of Nest Artisan crafting opportunities!

15 Days of Giving
Finally, a number of Nest’s brand partners have joined our 15 Days of Giving Campaign by committing to give back a portion of their sales to Nest in early December. Customers can do good while shopping for their loved ones (or themselves) this holiday season. A full list of participating brands can be found here.
