Full Time Consultant Needed for Nest American Artisan Incubator

Birmingham, Alabama

March 1 –September 30, 2019

Nest, a New York City-based nonprofit, is seeking a consultant to support the development and implementation of a new program in Birmingham, Alabama. In partnership with the Goodrich Foundation, Mastercard’s Center for Inclusive Growth, and several other funding partners, Nest is expanding its US-based initiatives through an integrated artisan incubator program designed to connect and strengthen previously underrepresented “makers” in Birmingham. After a comprehensive landscape analysis of existing local resources for makers and small artisan businesses, and completing research and data collection on existing makers in the area, a selected cohort will participate in four custom capacity building clinics and a culminating marketplace event to showcase their product to both local and national retailers. Working alongside Nest’s Chief Operating Officer and the organization’s executive team, the consultant will lead development and implementation of the Birmingham artisan incubator.

Primary responsibilities and expectations for this role include:

General

  • Be on-site in Birmingham for the duration of the 7 month contract
  • Serve as the main point of communication for all artisan partners, local partners and capacity building facilitators in Birmingham

Landscape Analysis & Local Partnerships

  • Conduct research and outreach on existing local makers leveraging local partners, organizations and events
  • Refine or develop recruitment materials, including a specific introduction packet outlining the program benefits and scope
  • Conduct surveys with 50+ artisans; data will inform a landscape report
  • Research and broker relationships with local partners promoting small business development, local incubators, university programs, etc. to assess existing resources and structures that can support and supplement the Artisan Incubator

Artisan Recruitment

  • Work with Nest Executive Leadership and funding partners to select a cohort of 15-18 artisan entrepreneurs to participate in the incubator
  • Work with the Nest team to conduct Nest’s Strategic Growth Assessments with each cohort member to help define key business needs

 Capacity Building

  • Outline curricula topics for capacity building clinics and market entry strategies
  • Work with the Nest team to develop four, 2-day business capacity building clinics based on the curricula topics  identified in the enrollment surveys leveraging Nest’s corporate partners who have agreed to be session leaders
    • Recruit additional speakers, as needed
  • Work with the clinic facilitators to ensure each is well prepared and the content is meaningful and appropriate for the audience
  • Manage logistics and preparations for, as well as attend all clinics and work with the facilitators to codify content into open source curricula that can be shared with other American makers in the Nest Artisan Guild

Market Showcase

  • Coordinate all aspects of a 2–day cash-and-carry market sales event for the incubator cohort, including securing event space, tables, design, set up, and any additional materials needed for event execution including publicizing the event
  • Work with Nest graphic designer to create comprehensive list of artisan participants that can be shared with stores and buyers (local and national)

Program wrap-up

  • Create and conduct a final survey gathering feedback from participating artisans
  • Create a program report recapping relevant information including, but not limited to: artisan profiles; recap of the capacity building clinics including major themes and key takeaways; landscape of business programs and landscape of sales opportunities; feedback from the post-event survey
  • Support the Nest team in outlining opportunities for program replication and areas of potential continued support for the Birmingham cohort

Compensation: $44,000 for the seven month consultancy

Travel stipend can be provided as needed
